The Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) has congratulated World Sports Betting Newlands Groundsman Braam Mong after winning prestigious Betway SA20 season 3 award.
Mong was named as Groundsman of the Year at the conclusion of season 3’s Betway SA20.
After facing a challenging year as a result of the outcome of the New Year’s Test against India in January 2024, Mong and his team made an exceptional turnaround to revert Newlands back to the ground it once was.
The recent One Day International (ODI) and Test series against Pakistan was praised for the competitive cricket that was on display, which was largely due to the extensive work and wicket prepared by Mong and his ground staff.
Having successfully hosted five MI Cape Town home matches at Newlands, all of which were won by MI Cape Tow, Mong was selected as the Groundsman of the Year for Betway SA20, which is regarded as the second largest T20 league in the world.
“We congratulate Braam and his support staff for this amazing achievement and we praise them for the commitment and dedication shown in their preparation throughout the winter and their skilled management of the outfield and the playing surfaces during the season, which assisted Newlands to regain its status as a premier venue for international and domestic cricket, fitting to its iconic status” said Corrie van Zyl, CEO of WPCA.
Mong commented: "The award is a testament to the consistent hard work and dedication that goes into preparing and maintaining the Newlands pitch. It’s incredibly rewarding to see that hard work recognized, and I’m grateful to build on last season’s success to once again deliver quality surfaces that players and fans can enjoy.”
