Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) CEO Corrie van Zyl congratulated the winners at the annual WPCA awards held at World Sports Betting Newlands Cricket Ground on Wednesday. The event was a chance to look back on and celebrate a successful season for both the men’s and women’s World Sports Betting Western Province teams in a night full of sparkle and excitement.
WP Cricket also held an amateur awards ceremony on Saturday morning, to celebrate the best players from club cricket.
WPCA President, Johannes Adams, echoed the celebratory mood, stating: “Last night was a testament to the incredible talent and hard work within our system. From our club cricketers to our professional stars, these awards highlight the depth of passion for the game in Western Province. We are not just building winning teams but also nurturing the future of South African cricket.”
The WSB Women’s team had a very successful season, keeping their Hollywoodbets Pro20 title and finishing second in the Hollywoodbets Pro50.
Meanwhile, the men’s team had a solid CSA T20 Challenge, finishing fourth. The tournament also saw WSB Western Province opener Eddie Moore become the top scorer with 328 runs. The Boys in Blue also finished fifth in the CSA 4-Day Series, where left-arm spinner Kyle Simmons took 25 wickets in just four matches.
The spotlight was on Girls in Blue bowler Kayla Reyneke and Boys in Blue allrounder George Linde, who each won two and three awards respectively. Reyneke took home the WSB WP Women’s Young Player of the Year and the WSB WP Women’s T20 Player of the Year, while Linde claimed the WSB WP Men’s Player of the Year, WSB WP Men’s 4-Day Player of the Year and WSB WP Player’s Player of the Year.
After a stellar season of big hits, Moore was named WSB WP Men’s T20 Player of the Year, while Simmonds received the WSB WP Men’s 50-Over Player of the Year award.
In the women’s team awards, Faye Tunnicliffe won the WSB WP Women’s 1-Day Cup Player of the Year, while captain Leah Jones took home the WSB WP Women’s Player of the Year and WSB WP Players Player of the Year awards.
Van Zyl used the occasion to celebrate the successes of the past season in both professional and amateur cricket. “These awards are a fitting tribute to a season of tremendous effort and achievement across our entire cricketing community,” said Van Zyl. “Celebrating our amateur club stars on Saturday and our professionals yesterday showcases the vibrant health of WP cricket.
