Warriors hold top spot as Lions keep the pressure on in 1-Day Cup race

The race for top spot in the 2025/26 1-Day Cup continues to intensify, with the Dafabet Warriors holding a narrow lead at the summit of the standings on 19 points, while the DP World Lions remain close behind on 18 points following another strong performance.
Both sides recorded victories over the weekend, while the NWU North West Dragons also secured an important win to keep themselves firmly in the hunt.
Warriors produced a dominant batting display to defeat Goldrush Boland by 87 runs after posting a mammoth 400/5 in their 50 overs in Paarl on Saturday.
After being electing to bat, the Warriors’ top order laid a solid platform through Muhammad Manack, who struck 57 off 61 balls. Modiri Litheko then anchored the innings superbly with 117 from 115 deliveries, striking nine fours and four sixes.
The innings exploded in the latter stages thanks to a breathtaking knock from Matthew De Villiers, who hammered 133 off just 77 balls, including 17 fours and five sixes. Late contributions from Patrick Kruger (36) and Jean du Plessis (28) propelled the Warriors to the imposing 400-run mark.
Boland’s chase showed promise through Blayde Capell, who scored 94 and Gavin Kaplan, who added 88 but the target ultimately proved too steep as they were bowled out for 313 in 44.5 overs.
Kerwin Mungroo (3/58) and Gideon Peters (3/61) led the Warriors’ bowling effort, while Senuran Muthusamy claimed two wickets to seal the 87-run victory.
Meanwhile in Johannesburg, Lions kept the pressure on the Warriors with a convincing 120-run victory (DLS method) over the Momentum Multiply Titans in the Jukskei derby on Sunday.
Batting first, the Lions reached 165/2 in 32.3 overs before rain intervened. Reeza Hendricks anchored the innings with a composed 82 not out, while Temba Bavuma added an unbeaten 43 and Rassie van der Dussen contributed 22.
In reply, the Titans struggled to gain momentum and were dismissed for 114 in 21 overs.
The Lions’ bowlers shared the spoils, with Bjorn Fortuin (3/33) and Nqaba Peter (3/35) striking key blows, while Hendricks added an unusual contribution with the ball, claiming 3/11 to wrap up the innings.
On Saturday, the North West Dragons delivered a commanding all-round performance to defeat the Hollywoodbets Dolphins by 134 runs in Durban.
After electing to bat first, the Dragons posted 272/8, powered by a superb 88 from Lesiba Ngoepe and a valuable 48 from Ruan de Swardt. Janneman Malan also chipped in with 45 at the top of the order.
The Dolphins’ chase never gained traction as the Dragons’ bowlers applied relentless pressure. Onke Nyaku starred with 4/32, while Caleb Seleka matched the effort with 4/23 to bowl the hosts out for 138 in 37.1 overs.
In Cape Town, Wayne Parnell produced a match-winning performance to guide the Moothee Ram Tuskers to a thrilling two-wicket victory over World Sports Betting Western Province on Sunday.
Province were bowled out for 269 in 47.1 overs, with Jiveshan Pillay leading the way with a fine 114 off 132 balls, while David Bedingham added a quick-fire 42.
The Tuskers’ chase got off to a shaky start after Dane Paterson ripped through the top order with outstanding figures of 5/34, leaving the visitors under pressure.
However, Parnell held the innings together with a superb 89 not out, sharing a crucial partnership with Ntandoyenkosi Zuma, who contributed 51.
The pair steadied the chase before the Tuskers crossed the line on 274/8, sealing an impressive comeback victory.
