It is with the deepest sorrow and heaviest of hearts that the Free State Cricket Union and
Knights Cricket family announce the passing of Petri Watson, fondly known as the heartbeat of Free State Cricket.
Petri’s journey with us began in 2009 when she joined as a ticket office administrator. Through her dedication, professionalism, and unmatched love for the game and its people, she worked her way up over the years, most recently serving as the PA to the CEO and Events Coordinator. In every role she held, Petri poured her heart into ensuring the smooth running of the Union, the Knights, and the many events that touched lives across the Free State and beyond.
Her passing leaves a void that words cannot fully express. Petri was not only a colleague but also a friend, mentor, and sister to many within our cricket family. Her warmth, laughter and tireless commitment made her a pillar of strength in our offices and an irreplaceable part of our journey.
Reflecting on this heartbreaking loss, Johan van Heerden, CEO of Free State Cricket Union, shared the following.
“What a sad day for Free State Cricket. Petri was that person who got into the hearts of everyone that worked with her. Her competence, her energy, the love she had for the game and the players. I cannot imagine the world without her. Petri, thank you for the role you played for Free State Cricket Union and myself in the last 16 years. You surely are going to be missed by all in the cricket fraternity. Our condolences to Allan and (the) Watson family.”
“It is with shock and great sadness to lose Petri. She was a pillar of strength in her work at Free State Cricket Union, always friendly and willing to assist. On behalf of the Board and Members’ Council, our heartfelt condolences to the Watson family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.” added Xander Snyders, President of Free State Cricket Union.
The Free State Cricket Union and Knights extend our heartfelt condolences to the Watson family, her friends and all who had the privilege of knowing her. We grieve together, holding onto the beautiful memories she has left behind and the lasting legacy of kindness, passion and service that will forever remain in our hearts.
Rest in eternal peace, Petri. You will always be remembered as the heartbeat of Free State Cricket.
