The North West Dragons produced a commanding all-round performance to defeat the Hollywoodbets Dolphins by 134 runs in their 1-Day Cup clash at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead on Saturday.
After winning the toss, the Dragons opted to bat first and recovered from early setbacks to post a competitive 272/8, built around a superb middle-order partnership between Lesiba Ngoepe and Ruan de Swardt.
The Dolphins made early inroads with the new ball. In the third over Bayanda Majola struck when Ludwich Schuld slashed at a wide delivery and was caught at third man by Zidane Mahomed for 17. The pressure continued when Tristan Luus removed Meeka-Eel Prince for 10, edging to Slade van Staden at slip to leave the Dragons 36/2 after seven overs.
Despite the early breakthroughs, the Dragons stabilised and reached 56/2 after the first 10 overs. The Dolphins struck again in the 18th over when Jon-Jon Smuts claimed a straightforward caught-and-bowled chance to dismiss Wihan Lubbe, ending a 45-run stand and reducing the visitors to 80/3.
Janneman Malan and Dominic Hendricks then attempted to rebuild, guiding the Dragons past 100 in the 24th over. At the halfway stage of the innings the Dragons were 105/3, with Malan on 34 and Hendricks on 12.
Majola returned to break that partnership in the 29th over when Hendricks gloved a rising delivery through to wicketkeeper Hanu Viljoen for 18, leaving the Dragons 116/4. Two overs later sharp fielding brought another wicket when Marques Ackerman produced a direct hit to run out Malan for 45, reducing the Dragons to 125/5.
From that point the innings was transformed by an outstanding partnership between Ngoepe and De Swardt. The pair counter-attacked effectively, bringing up a 50-run stand in the 39th over and steadily shifting the momentum back toward the visitors.
Their partnership ultimately reached 118 runs, lifting the Dragons into a strong position before it was broken late in the innings. Ngoepe fell for 88 from 68 balls, caught at short third man by Majola off the bowling of Mahomed in the 48th over.
The Dolphins struck twice more in the closing overs. Onke Nyaku was well caught by Ackerman at long-on off Majola for seven and shortly afterwards De Swardt fell for a valuable 48, again caught by Ackerman. The Dragons finished on 272/8 from their 50 overs.
Majola was the pick of the Dolphins bowlers with 3/61, while Luus claimed 2/43 and Smuts delivered an economical spell of 1/34 in his 10 overs.
In response, the Dolphins’ chase of 273 never gained traction as the Dragons’ bowlers were in control from the outset.
Nyaku made the early breakthrough when Smuts was caught at point for one in the third over, leaving the Dolphins 2/1. Nyaku struck again when Van Staden was caught at mid-off for seven, and he soon claimed a third wicket when Ackerman fell for 12, reducing the hosts to 29/3 inside nine overs.
At the end of the first 10 overs the Dolphins were struggling at 32/3, with Tshepang Dithole and Romashan Pillay attempting to rebuild the innings.
Dithole made 26 before picking out deep square leg off Alfred Mothoa, leaving the Dolphins 70/4 in the 17th over. The situation worsened soon after when Hanu Viljoen edged to slip for a duck in the 19th over to leave the hosts 74/5.
Pillay offered resistance with 34 from 51 balls but he was caught at long-on off Caleb Seleka in the 25th over as the Dolphins slipped to 91/6. Seleka continued to apply pressure when he bowled Luus for five in the 31st over, leaving the Dolphins 110/7 and still requiring 163 runs.
After the drinks break Imran Tahir holed out to deep mid-wicket to give Seleka his third wicket, with the Dolphins 123/8 in the 35th over. Two overs later Gomolemo Phiri was caught at long-off for 32, again off Seleka, leaving the hosts 138/9.
The final wicket soon followed when Zeden Mahommed was caught at point off Nyaku for three, bringing the innings to a close on 138.
Nyaku set the tone with key early breakthroughs, while Seleka’s middle-overs spell ensured the Dolphins never recovered as the Dragons sealed an emphatic 134-run victory.
