Celebrating the triumph of the Deaf community in cricket and sport was the name of the game at the DP World Lions Deaf Cricket 50th Anniversary Celebration in the DP World Wanderers Stadium Long Room on Saturday.
Since its formation in 1975, the DP World Lions Deaf Cricket team has been a beacon of inclusion, proving that the spirit of the game knows no boundaries — not even those of sound. Through every over bowled and every boundary struck, these athletes have
shattered stereotypes, inspired young Deaf sportspeople and proudly represented DP World Lions Deaf Cricket and Deaf Cricket South Africa on and off the pitch.
Colin Venter of the DP World Lions Deaf Cricket team said: “The 50th Anniversary celebration served not only as a commemoration but also as a tribute to the generations of Deaf Cricketers gone before us as well as the current players who continue to elevate the game. We acknowledged the growing recognition of Deaf cricket in Johannesburg and our surrounding regions. DP World and the Lions Cricket franchise have played a key role in supporting inclusive cricket initiatives; helping to provide opportunities, resources and platforms for Deaf cricketers to thrive and we are extremely grateful to all involved over the 50 years.”
The celebration featured acknowledgments of former and current players and stakeholders who have contributed to the extraordinary journey. The History of Deaf Cricket was also presented to all present, with the reminder that cricket is for everyone - and Deaf players are not just participating; they are making history.
For those wanting to get involved and support Deaf Cricket in South Africa, Cricket Services Manager for Lions Cricket Reuben Mandlazi welcomes people to reach out and try out, or donate if you are able: “As we celebrate 50 years of Deaf cricketing excellence, we are looking to the future - and we need your support to grow even stronger. We are always on the lookout for talented hearing impaired players of all ages. Whether you're a seasoned cricketer or just starting out, or know someone with a hearing disability, get in touch. We encourage you to support the movement and help us continue breaking barriers by investing in inclusive sport. Your sponsorship or donation will go directly toward coaching, equipment, development programs and national representation opportunities for Deaf cricketers in our Province.”
