Betway SA20 Season 4 served up high-quality cricket with several individuals delivering magnificent performances to earn recognition in the Betway SA20 Season 4 Team of the Tournament.
Champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape provide four players, including the Betway SA20 MVP and Batter of the Season Quinton de Kock and Rising Star Jordan Hermann.
Runners-up Pretoria Capitals have three players, with most notably Betway SA20 Player of the Final Dewald Brevis.
The team will be captained by Durban’s Super Giants’ Aiden Markram.
The selection panel consisted of the SuperSport commentary panel AB de Villiers, Kevin Pietersen, Eoin Morgan, Ashwell Prince, Mpumelelo "Pommie" Mbangwa, Natalie Germanos, Mark Nicholas, Dale Steyn, Nikhil Uttamchandani, Robin Uthappa and Betway SA20 Head of Cricket Operations Stephen Cook.
De Kock enjoyed a new lease of life at the Sunrisers Eastern Cape. The veteran opening batter scorched to the top of the batting leaderboard with 390 runs at an average of 39.0 at a strike-rate of 148, which played a leading role in Sunrisers’ championship run. De Kock was also excellent behind stumps, grabbing some one-handed blinders along the way.
The competition’s leading-run scorer across all four seasons, Ryan Rickelton was once again in sublime form. The MI Cape Town opener broke the century barrier this season with two tons to push his overall tally to 1 216 runs.
It was a tough start for Markram at his new franchise, Durban’s Super Giants but he found form towards the back end of the competition with 66 and a superb 108 against the Paarl Royals at his new home ground Kingsmead to sign off the season. He was also elected captain of the Betway SA20 Team of the Tournament.
The League’s record-signing, Brevis, lived up to his billing in the Play-off matches and Final with an undefeated 74 in Qualifier 1 before stroking a century of the highest calibre in the final showpiece. Brevis’ ball-striking was of the highest order, he enjoyed his best season yet with 370 runs at an average of 41.1 and strike-rate of 156.12.
The second Sunrisers Eastern Cape player in the XI is Hermann, who won the Rising Star of the Season Award for some crucial contributions throughout the competition.
The first overseas player in the line-up is Pretoria Capitals’ Sherfane Rutherford. The West Indian power-hitter lit up the competition with his electrifying innings that literally kept the Capitals’ campaign alive, none more so than when he rescued his team from 7/5 with an undefeated 74 against Joburg Super Kings at the Wanderers.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape's Marco Jansen occupies the allrounder slot. Last season’s MVP delivered a match-winning spell in the final of 3/10 against the Capitals, while he also made some valuable contributions with the bat lower down the order.
Sikandar Raza fast developed into a cult hero at Paarl Royals with a string of impressive performances with the ball from the outset before setting Boland Park alight with a clutch final-ball six to take his team over the line in a thriller against Durban’s Super Giants. The Zimbabwean claimed 15 wickets overall to finish third on the overall table.
Pretoria Capitals’ captain Keshav Maharaj is the second spinner in the side. Maharaj adapted to his new home ground, Centurion and was brilliant on the road. The left-arm spinner claimed 12 wickets at the miserly economy of 6.49 and came within touching distance of leading the Capitals’ to their maiden championship title.
The fourth and final Sunrisers player is fast bowler Anrich Nortje. Having missed the last two seasons due to injury, Nortje was back to his bristling best, clocking speeds in excess of 150 km/h, to earn 18 wickets at an average of 15.77.
Last but certainly not least is Ottneil Baartman. The leading wicket-taker in the history of the competition raised his game to the next level at Paarl Royals by finishing top of the charts with 20 wickets at an average of 13.55.
Baartman was sensational against Pretoria Capitals at Centurion, claiming a first-ever hat-trick before going on to bag a magical 5/16 - the only five-wicket haul of the competition.
Baartman’s young teammate Nqobani Mokoena is the 12th player. The teenager enjoyed a breakout Betway SA20 season, impressing with his pace and hostility, as he bounced out a few senior batters.
Mokoena finished with 13 wickets - the joint fourth-highest - and dependent on conditions would get into the XI at the expense of the second spinner.
