  • Raymond Tuputupu of the Hurricanes has been issued a red card for alleged foul play during a Super Rugby Pacific match at the weekend.

Tuputupu is alleged to have contravened Law 9.13: A player must not tackle an opponent early, late or dangerously, during the match between the Chiefs and Hurricanes at FMG Stadium Waikato in Hamilton on Friday.

The case is to be considered in the first instance by the Sanzaar Foul Play Review Committee which will take place on Monday via videoconference.

  • Taniela Tupou of the Rebels has been cited for alleged foul play during a Super Rugby Pacific match at the weekend.

Tupou is alleged to have contravened Law 9.20: Dangerous play in a ruck or maul, during the match between the Brumbies and Rebels at GIO Stadium in Canberra on Friday.

Upon further review of the match footage, the Citing Commissioner deemed in his opinion the incident had met the red card threshold for foul play.

The case is to be considered in the first instance by the Sanzaar Foul Play Review Committee which will take place on Monday via videoconference.

  • Tupou has been issued with a warning for his actions. A warning may be issued by the Super Rugby Pacific Foul Play Review Committee for foul play incidents that are very close to but in their opinion, do not meet the red card threshold.

The Super Rugby Pacific Foul Play Review Committee of Stephen Hardy (Chair), Stefan Terblanche and Ofisa Tonu'u assessed the case.

In his finding, Foul Play Review Committee Chair Hardy ruled the following: "Having conducted a detailed review of all the available evidence, including all camera angles and additional evidence, including from the player and submissions from his legal representative, Harry Forrester, the Foul Play Review Committee found the foul play did not reach the red card threshold.

"With respect to sanction the Foul Play Review Committee deemed the act of foul play merited a warning as it was close to but did not reach the red card threshold.

“Fortunately, no head contact or significant injury resulted from the incident.  Had there been head contact and/or a more severe injury, the outcome may well have been a different one for the player.

"In light of the above, the citing was dismissed with a warning sanction imposed on the player for the offence which will remain on the player’s record."

"The player is therefore free to resume playing.”

  • Adrian Choat of the Blues has been cited for alleged foul play during a Super Rugby Pacific match at the weekend.

Choat is alleged to have contravened Law 9.13: A player must not tackle an opponent early, late or dangerously, during the match between the Crusaders and Blues at Apollo Projects Stadium in Christchurch on Saturday.

Upon further review of the match footage, the Citing Commissioner deemed in his opinion the incident had met the red card threshold for foul play.

The case is to be considered in the first instance by the Sanzaar Foul Play Review Committee which will take place on Monday 8 April via videoconference.

The Super Rugby Pacific Foul Play Review Committee of Hardy (Chair), Terblanche and Tonu'u assessed the case.

In his finding, Foul Play Review Committee Chair Hardy ruled the following: "Having conducted a detailed review of all the available evidence, including all camera angles and additional evidence, including from the player and submissions from his legal representative, Aaron Lloyd, the Foul Play Review Committee found the foul play did not reach the red card threshold.

“The player's actions constituted foul play with direct head contact but the Committee found the offending to be less than a high degree of danger, with low to mid level degree of force, arising from the smother-like absorption in contact with no follow-through within the tackle, the player not running (and rather stepping) into contact and a consequent lower degree of danger.

"With respect to sanction the Foul Play Review Committee deemed the act of foul play merited a warning as it was close to but did not reach the red card threshold.

"In light of the above, the citing was dismissed with a warning sanction imposed on the player for the offence which will remain on the player’s record.

"The player is therefore free to resume playing.”

All Sanzaar disciplinary matters are in the first instance referred to the Foul Play Review Committee to provide the option of expediting the judicial process.

For a matter to be dispensed with at this hearing, the person appearing must plead guilty and accept the penalty offered by the Foul Play Review Committee.
