The Hollywoodbets Dolphins are celebrating a proud moment for KwaZulu-Natal cricket this weekend as young seamer Nqobani Mokoena delivered a memorable performance on debut for the Proteas against New Zealand on Sunday.
The 19-year-old produced a Player of the Match display in the first T20 International, claiming three wickets to help South Africa secure a convincing victory and announce himself on the international stage.
For the Dolphins, Mokoena’s performance represents another success story from the province’s cricketing pipeline and a reflection of the depth of talent being developed in KwaZulu-Natal.
Born in KwaMashu, Mokoena’s cricket journey began in the KZNCU Hub Programme where he was first introduced to the game of cricket. His rapid advancement and standout performances at the annual KZNCU, KZNDSAC and Sunfoil Tournament saw him earn a scholarship to Northwood Boys High School, one of the Province’s well-known cricketing nurseries.
It was there that he continued to develop his skills and quickly emerged as one of the most exciting young bowlers in the region.
His performances at school level led to national recognition when he represented South Africa at Under-19 level, further highlighting his potential and placing him firmly on the radar of selectors.
Mokoena’s progression through the ranks has been closely followed within the Dolphins setup. After making his way through the provincial system and earning opportunities in the Dolphins environment, the young quick steadily built a reputation as one of the most promising fast-bowling prospects to emerge from KwaZulu-Natal in recent years.
He was picked up by the Paarl Royals and immediately made an impact in the SA20 earlier this year picking up 13 wickets in his debut season.
His pace, ability to generate bounce and calm temperament have marked him out as a player capable of competing at the highest level.
Those qualities were evident on debut for the Proteas. Opening the bowling, Mokoena showed composure beyond his years before returning later in the innings to claim three crucial wickets, helping restrict New Zealand to a modest total and setting up South Africa’s victory.
For the Hollywoodbets Dolphins, seeing one of their young players make an immediate impact on the international stage is a source of immense pride and further motivation to continue developing the next generation of talent in KwaZulu-Natal.
"Nqobani's rise to international cricket is no surprise," CEO of KZN Cricket Heinrich Strydom said. "He's an incredibly hard worker and he has shown composure beyond his years in his short professional career.
"We are incredibly proud of what he has achieved already and once again, Nqobani is a shining light for our KZN pipeline and all the hard work that goes in by administrators and coaches to nurture talent.
"Our development structures in KZN continue to produce and we are very happy to see another youngster making a name for himself on the international stage."
As Mokoena begins his journey in Proteas colours, the Dolphins and the wider KZN cricket community will be watching with pride as one of their own continues to grow on the world stage.
