Lions roar to bonus point win over Heat

DP World Lions strengthened their position in the YesPlay Pro20 Cup with a commanding eight-wicket bonus-point victory over Northern Cape Heat in Johannesburg on Sunday.
The Flexbrands Knights also claimed their first win of the competition with a convincing 54-run triumph over CSA High Performance in Pretoria.
Lions won the toss and elected to bowl first, restricting Heat to 137/5 in their allotted overs.
Steve Stolk top-scored with 35 before falling to Nqaba Peter in the 10th over, by which stage Heat had also lost Liam Doherty and Nonelela Yikha.
Kyle Jacobs contributed 34, while Jordan Neil added 30 but the visitors were unable to build the partnerships needed to post a more competitive total.
In reply, Zubayr Hamza struck 53 and Rassie van der Dussen contributed an unbeaten 47 as Lions chased down the target in just 12 overs.
Hamza and Connor Esterhuizen were the only wickets to fall as the hosts secured their fourth victory in six matches.
In Pretoria, Knights finally got their campaign up and running with a commanding bonus-point win over CSA High Performance at Tuks Oval.
Asked to bat first, the Bloemfontein-based side made an emphatic statement through a 125-run opening partnership between Jonathan Bird and Gihahn Cloete, laying the foundation for a formidable total of 206.
Bird narrowly missed out on a century, falling three runs short, while Cloete contributed 41.
Cole Abrahams provided a valuable late contribution, finishing unbeaten on 29 as Knights posted their highest total of the competition to date.
CSA High Performance suffered an early setback in the chase when Andaan Lagadien was dismissed before scoring any run. Opening partner Ombesa Matsha followed for 14, leaving the hosts under pressure.
Kamo Phiri battled for 30 before falling to veteran spinner Dane Piedt, while Vihan Pretorius top-scored with 46. However, the target proved beyond their reach as CSA High Performance finished on 152/6, handing Knights a comprehensive 54-run victory. The result leaves them among the two teams yet to register a win in the competition.
Saturday’s only fixture saw Defabet Boland claim a 39-run victory over Mpumalanga Rhinos in Paarl to consolidate second place in Pool A.
Sent in to bat, the hosts endured a difficult start as openers Gavin Kaplan and Blayde Capell fell for seven and two respectively.
Neil Brand steadied the innings with a crucial 72, guiding Boland to 141/6.
In response, Ruben du Toit led the Rhinos’ effort with 45 but received insufficient support from the rest of the batting line-up.
The visitors were eventually bowled out for 102 with four balls remaining, securing Boland a comfortable victory.
The YesPlay Pro20 Cup resumes on Tuesday, with Hollywoodbets Dolphins hosting Dafabet Warriors in Durban.
