Marius Hermann wears a flamboyant shirt representing both the Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Paarl Royals colours whenever these two sides face each other in Betway SA20.
It is, of course, to equally support his sons, Jordan and Rubin, who play for the respective teams.
But now, Marius can finally wear a single Proteas green shirt after both were selected for the Proteas T20I tour to New Zealand, which starts against the Black Caps at Mount Maunganui on Sunday.
Rubin had, of course, played for the Proteas before but it will be Jordan’s debut international series.
“I think it's a special feeling,” Jordan told Betway SA20 from New Zealand. “I think the investment my family has made into our careers, it's immense from my dad, my mom, the whole family. They're incredibly supportive. I don't always show my appreciation to them because I never read the WhatsApps or anything like that.
“But it takes a village to grow a person and develop a career. I think our village still has an incredibly good stead.
“I think the amount of balls my dad has thrown to us and the amount of therapy lessons our mom gave us to cope, it all plays a part. My parents can be extremely proud of what they achieved within us. It's a special feeling for the family.
“My dad's on his flight, yeah. He's not going to miss this opportunity, no way.”
Jordan’s journey has been a winding one to the Proteas. After initially being the hotshot in the Hermann family, Jordan had to watch his elder brother, Rubin, shoot the lights out for Paarl Royals in Season 3, which saw him graduate to Proteas colours before his younger “boetie” Jordan last year.
The duo are now due to become the first set of brothers to play for the Proteas since Albie and Morne Morkel.
“I'm very glad for my brother's success. I always hope the best for him,” Jordan said.
Nothing is warranted. He performed very well for the chances he got. I think he was well-deserved.
“I'm a firm believer that my chance will come when it comes. I was quite comfortable with the decision. I think he's an unbelievable striker with the ball.
“He's basically made for white ball cricket and now starting to make a name in red ball as well. I'm chuffed with all the success he's had. I don't think it impacts or reflects to me.
“I'm just glad my brother's career is blooming and he's doing well. I think my time will come on its own.”
Jordan has certainly been one of the premier success stories of Betway SA20 since its inception four seasons ago.
The Sunrisers Eastern Cape star was belatedly signed up as Wildcard for Season 1 with the then 21-year-old having precious little first-class experience behind him.
Walking into a dressing room filled with both Proteas stalwarts such as Aiden Markram would have intimidated any youngster but not Hermann. The stylish left-hander made an immediate impression through his work ethic at training and transferred that energy out in the middle where he caught the attention of none other than Proteas legend AB de Villiers.
Now no longer in the shadows, Hermann had a target on his back, and despite striking a maiden T20 century in Betway SA20 Season 2 at Newlands, the expectation was starting to weigh heavily before fulfilling his immense potential when he was named Rising Star of Season 4 due his return of 273 runs at an average of 34.12 and strike-rate of 137.1.
“I think Season 1 is almost like a duck out of water, I would say. Luckily, somehow I managed to have a few good performances that helped the team out. And then Season 2 and 3 are the same thing,” Hermann said.
“It felt like I'm getting better, but the competition is also getting better. And I think I've learned a lot about my game in SA20, and I've grown my game a lot. And I think SA20 has helped me expose my game in ways that I have to be better.
“I'm extremely grateful for the platform it gives you to play against the best in the world and to grow your game exponentially quickly, because there's no other choice. And, yeah, it's been awesome.”
