The Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) has officially unveiled the senior contracted squads for the World Sports Betting Western Province Men’s ahead of the 2026/27 season, signalling a renewed sense of ambition, stability and long-term intent across both structures.

Heading into the new campaign, the side has placed a clear emphasis on continuity, retaining the core group of players who formed the backbone of the previous season. This consistency has been strategically complemented by a number of carefully considered additions, aimed at strengthening key areas of the squad while adding valuable depth to an already competitive unit.

WP have parted ways with two experienced campaigners Beuran Hendricks, Mthiwekhaya Nabe, while younger players, Juan James and Jonathan Bird could not be accommodated within the reduced Division 1 contracted squads for the 2026/27 season and beyond. WPCA extends its sincere gratitude to these players for their professionalism and contributions to the province and wishes them every success in their future endeavours.

A major boost to the squad ahead of the new season is the retention of fast bowler Nandre Burger, who returns to the provincial setup following him losing his national contract. Burger has been included in Cricket South Africa’s newly introduced Players of National Interest (PONIs) group - a select pool of Division 1 players identified as part of the national succession pipeline across all formats, contributing to both international ambitions and South Africa A tours.

Another standout development sees leg spinner Josh Breed rewarded with a senior contract following a stellar season, where his consistency and impact played a crucial role for the Boys in Blue.

Breed is joined by Mbulelo Dube, whose resilience and determination saw him step up in key moments. He is also joined by Oliver Whitehead, who continues to grow his footprint within the provincial setup and adds further depth to the squad. WPCA also confirmed the announcement of two High Performance contracts, awarded to Bongile Mfunelwa and Kashief Joseph, recognising their potential and continued progression within the pathway structure.

In addition, Daniel Smith, Valentine Kitime and Joshua van Heerden are among a group of young, talented players who have been rewarded for their performances with new two-year contracts, underlining WPCA’s commitment to developing and retaining emerging talent for the future.

WPCA CEO Corrie van Zyl welcomed the squad announcements, highlighting the balance between experience, emerging talent and long-term strategy as Western Province continues to build a competitive, sustainable structure across formats.

WPCA President, Johannes Adams added: “The 2026/27 squad reflects our commitment to continuity and growth. We are building a culture that rewards performance while creating clear pathways for players to progress from provincial cricket to the national stage.”
