Statement win for NWU, thriller between Kovsies and Tuks in Varsity Netball Round 1

The first bumper weekend of Varsity Netball 2026 got off to a flying start at the Maties Coetzenburg Indoor Centre in Stellenbosch. Defending champions NWU Eagles scored a comfortable victory over Madibaz while five-time champions Kovsies prevailed in a nail-biter against UP-Tuks. UJ beat hosts Maties while Wits were victorious over newcomers CUT.

MATIES 39-46 UJ

The action got underway in Stellenbosch, with Maties welcoming UJ in a highly anticipated opening clash.

The contest lived up to expectations from the start, with both sides showing their intent in front of a packed Maties Coetzenburg Indoor Centre. The Maroon Machine made an energetic start, but UJ quickly found their rhythm and edged ahead 11-8 at the end of the opening quarter.

After the first break, UJ raised the intensity. Bongiwe Msomi’s charges applied relentless pressure, making life difficult for the home side and extending their advantage. The Johannesburg outfit opened up a ten-goal lead, heading into half-time with a 24-14 advantage.

Maties returned from the interval with renewed energy and looked a different side. Inspired by their home supporters, they mounted a determined fightback and began to chip away at UJ’s lead.

However, the Orange Army remained composed under pressure and entered the final quarter with a 36-27 advantage.

The visitors continued to hold their ground in the closing stages, frustrating Maties and capitalising on their inability to make full use of their Power Play opportunities.

UJ goal shooter Kadijat Abubakar proved to be the difference, delivering a standout performance and finishing as the match’s leading scorer. Her accuracy in the circle helped UJ maintain control and secure a 46-39 victory over Maties.

For Maties, there were plenty of positives to take from their second-half fightback, while UJ made an early statement of intent in their Varsity Netball 2026 campaign.

MADIBAZ 31-74 NWU EAGLES

Defending champions NWU Eagles wasted no time in making their intentions clear as they opened their Varsity Netball title defence against Gqeberha-based Madibaz.

The North West outfit came out firing, displaying impressive composure, intensity and attacking flair from the opening whistle. Their relentless approach quickly paid dividends as they established a commanding 21-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

NWU continued to dominate after the first break, dictating the tempo and putting Madibaz under constant pressure. The defending champions looked determined to start their campaign on a high and showed exactly why they remain one of the teams to beat.

By half-time, the Eagles had built an imposing 44-17 advantage.

Madibaz struggled to find their rhythm after the restart, while NWU continued to operate with confidence and precision. The defending champions extended their lead to 58-23 heading into the final quarter, with the contest increasingly looking one-sided.

There was no let-up from NWU in the closing stages as they continued to pile on the pressure on their opponents and eventually cruised to a convincing 74-31 victory.

CUT 43-48 WITS

Game three delivered another closely fought encounter as Wits faced tournament newcomers CUT.

CUT settled into the contest quickly after Wits opened the scoring, showing no signs of being overwhelmed by the occasion. The two sides traded points throughout the opening quarter but Wits held a narrow 10-9 advantage at the first break.

The intensity continued in the second quarter, with both teams showing courage and determination as they battled for territory and tried to gain control of the contest. Wits managed to maintain their slender advantage, heading into half-time with a 22-18 lead.

After the interval, the Witsies' experience began to show. The Johannesburg side increased the tempo and started to assert greater control, using their tournament experience and tactical discipline to create separation.

Wits extended their lead to 37-28 by the end of the third quarter.

CUT refused to surrender and fought to the final whistle, keeping the pressure on the more experienced Wits side in a tense closing period.

However, Wits held their nerve when it mattered most, securing a hard-fought 48-43 victory and surviving a spirited challenge from the Varsity Netball newcomers.

UP-TUKS 55-58 KOVSIES

The final clash brought a fitting end to day one of Varsity Netball 2026with last year’s runners-up Kovsies going head-to-head with UP-Tuks.

The two heavyweight sides wasted no time setting the pace, trading attacking blows in a fast and physical opening quarter. Neither team was willing to give an inch but Kovsies managed to take a narrow 13-11 lead into the first break.

The Stripe Generation responded strongly in the second quarter, finding their rhythm and beginning to dictate the flow of the contest. Their pressure paid off as they overturned the deficit and headed into half-time with a slender 28-26 advantage.

The momentum shifted again after the interval as the five-time champions came out with renewed purpose. The third quarter produced a thrilling, end-to-end battle. Kovsies regained the lead, taking a 42-38 advantage into the final quarter.

The final 15 minutes produced another high-intensity battle. Both sides continued to push the tempo. Kovsies showed composure when it mattered most, protecting their narrow advantage to secure a hard-fought 58-55 victory over Tuks.
