Sharks will follow Esterhuizen into battle once again

The Hollywoodbets Sharks will again be captained this season by Springbok and Sharks centre Andre Esterhuizen. Voted Players’ Player of the Year at last season’s Sharks Awards, Esterhuizen continues to lead from the front through his uncompromising effort, physical presence and work ethic.

He will be supported by co-captains Emile van Heerden, Nick Hatton and Vincent Tshituka.

As the Sharks build the next chapter in the club’s story, head coach JP Pietersen has placed significant emphasis on strengthening a high-performance culture rooted in the standards that have long defined the Sharks: discipline, accountability and respect. Vincent Koch and Phepsi Buthelezi have been appointed Club Captains to help embed those standards across the squad.

Commenting on the appointments, Pietersen said: “Andre has been an outstanding leader for this team and I have absolute faith in him to keep setting that standard on the field. What makes this group special is the depth around him: Emile, Nick and Vincent Tshituka will share that responsibility as co-captains, while Vincent Koch and Phepsi Buthelezi will work alongside Andre and our coaching staff to drive standards and shared responsibility.

“Every player in this squad has a leader close by, holding the same line. That means all of us - players and coaches alike - are accountable to one another. Nobody is above the standard; everybody is held to it equally. That is the culture our coaching team and this leadership group will drive throughout the season.”

The Club Captains will help drive culture, standards and accountability, while creating closer alignment between the playing squad and team management. Their appointment marks a deliberate evolution in the Sharks’ leadership structure, with a clear distinction between those who drive performance on the field and those who safeguard the standards that make that performance possible.

Esterhuizen’s captaincy centres on the 80 minutes: reading the game, making calls under pressure, driving discipline and inspiring his teammates through his physical example. Koch and Buthelezi’s mandate begins long before kick-off and continues long after the final whistle.

As Club Captains, they are custodians of the environment in which the team trains, prepares and works. They will set the tone in the changeroom, hold standards firm in the gym and on the training ground and ensure that Sharks values are visible in how players conduct themselves every day. Their role connects the example set by those who have worn the black and white before them with the standards this group wants the next generation to inherit.

The Sharks captain and club captains will serve as a vital link between the changeroom and the coaching and management team, ensuring clear alignment between what is asked of the players and what they need to perform at their best.

This structure reflects a squad maturing both in talent and in the way it takes responsibility for itself. It ensures that the intensity, discipline and pride associated with the Sharks do not rest on one person but are carried collectively by leaders with distinct and complementary roles.

With the new season kicking off next Saturday, there is a real sense of excitement and momentum building at Hollywoodbets Kings Park.

Together, Esterhuizen’s on-field leadership, the support of the co-captains and the cultural stewardship of Koch and Buthelezi reflect the alignment the Sharks are building: one group, united by shared standards, mutual accountability and ambition, and conscious of the responsibility that comes with representing the badge.
