EPCR, alongside the entire rugby community, is mourning the loss of the former England wing and fullback, Tom Voyce. A gentleman on and off the pitch, Voyce won nine caps for England during his career. He also enjoyed an incredible six years at London Wasps, during which time he helped them win – amongst other accolades – two European titles.

In total, Voyce made 64 appearances in European Champions Cup and Challenge Cup matches, from his debut with Bath in 2000, through to his final Heineken Cup appearance with Gloucester Rugby in 2012. He retired from professional rugby in 2013.

Dominic McKay, Chairman of EPCR, said: “Everyone at EPCR is shocked by the tragic loss of an incredible rugby player, who forever left his mark on European rugby. Alongside the entire rugby community, we are deeply saddened by this news.

“We send our deepest condolences to his wife Anna, his son and all his family and friends.”

Voyce died after trying to cross a flood-swollen river in his car.

Northumbria Police previously said they believed the rugby star had been swept away after he tried to drive across a flooded river in Storm Darragh after being out with friends on Saturday night.

The body of the 43-year-old was found downstream from Abberwick Ford on the Rilver Aln outside Alnwick, Northumberland.

Concerns were first raised for Voyce on Sunday after he failed to return home.

A major search operation was launched involving Northumbria Police, drones, the police helicopter, coastguard officers and the North of Tyne and Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Teams. Family and friends of the much-loved former rugby player also joined the search.

Officers do not believe there to be any third-party involvement and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
