Reynders still soaking it up with a smile

Zander Reynders’ debut for the Springbok Sevens, a year ago at the HSBC SVNS Cape Town, was a surreal experience and to return to DHL Stadium where it all started was a reminder of how blessed his rugby career has been since.

The 24-year-old was a rookie draft into the wider Springbok Sevens training squad a year ago and after a solid performance at the International Invitational tournament in Dubai, Blitzbok head coach Philip Snyman trusted his instincts and included the UP-Tuks player in the squad for Cape Town.

Ryan Oosthuizen, one of the more experienced players in the squad, picked up a concussion in Dubai and Reynders took his spot in Cape Town, where South Africa kicked on to win for the tournament for the first time since the inaugural event at DHL Stadium in 2015.

The rest, as they say, is history as Reynders – who also had to complete his final exams in Computer Science – went on to play in all the remaining HSBC SVNS tournaments, including the World Championship in Los Angeles, where the Blitzboks claimed the crown.

“Being back here makes me realise how fortunate I am and how much gratitude I feel,” Reynders said after a training session at the scenic Gardens Rugby Club, nestled under the majestic Table Mountain.

“Last year was a bit of a rush for me, so I am very happy that I can enjoy the whole experience of the Cape Town Sevens this time around, knowing what to expect much better and having a more settled understanding of my role in the team.

“That is probably the biggest thing for me, growing into my role and what responsibilities I have in the squad and once that settled in, I could also start enjoying the game a bit.

“The team made it easy for me, there is good leadership in the squad and we have a good bond in the team. Coach Philip also is very good in the way he expresses himself, so this time it is a calm Zander that will be running out on Saturday,” Reynders smiled.

The tall frame of Reynders (1.91m) has been increasingly noticeable for the Blitzboks. In Dubai, he scored two tries, had eight ball carries and gained 115m, and had the third best “strike rate” in terms of tries scored, added to his 73% tackle completion rate.

“We are playing New Zealand and Fiji in our opening two games – both are big and physical,” said Reynders.

“That means that we as forwards will have to counter that and make sure we dominate up front. If we can get momentum up front and control there, our backs will have space to play and express themselves. And we have seen how devastating they can be.”

This time around, he will also be able to focus on the game and the game only: “At least I could plan better with regards to tickets for family and having some friends to come and watch me, as last year it was a bit tight.

“It helps that I get married in a short while and many of our wedding guests made an early trip to Cape Town to come and watch me play,” a beaming Reynders said with a big smile.
