The Pretoria Capitals have announced the launch of the Pretoria Capitals TuksCricket Academy, in partnership with TuksCricket at the University of Pretoria. The initiative marks a significant step in the Capitals’ long-term vision to build a sustainable player development pathway and strengthen cricketing excellence in the region.
The academy, based at TuksCricket’s world-class facility at the University of Pretoria’s Hillcrest Sports Campus, will cater to aspiring cricketers between the ages of 17 and 25. With a focus on holistic development, the program combines elite cricket training with conditioning, sports science and personal growth.
TuksCricket and TuksSport operates in association with the Sports Exercise Medicine and Lifestyle Institute (SEMLI) at the High-Performance Centre (HPC). SEMLI provides a comprehensive range of services including sports medicine, physiotherapy, biokinetics, nutrition, and sport science support. The academy will benefit from access to six cricket ovals, 23 center wickets, 16 grass nets, eight artificial nets and four indoor lanes, ensuring players train in an environment designed for professional growth.
Each week, students will engage in five structured sessions that include both cricket and conditioning, under the guidance of experienced coaches from TuksCricket. The program also includes participation in competitive tournaments and friendly matches, offering players regular opportunities to test their skills in real-game environments.
TuksCricket, as part of the broader TuksSport programmes of more than 100 years, has been one of South Africa’s most respected and consistent cricket talent nurseries, producing several players who have gone on to represent the country and major domestic franchises. The program’s emphasis on discipline, education and professional standards has made it a benchmark for university-level cricket development globally.
The partnership with TuksCricket also forms part of Pretoria Capitals’ broader effort to establish a larger, year-round presence in South Africa. Beyond the SA20 season, the Capitals aim to contribute to cricket’s growth at all levels - from grassroots to high-performance - by investing in long-term player development and community engagement through initiatives like this academy.
Divyanshu Singh, CEO of JSW Sports and Pretoria Capitals, said: Our vision has always been to invest in the long-term growth of cricket and create opportunities for young players to experience a professional, high-performance environment. Partnering with TuksCricket allows us to build that pathway in Pretoria, using their exceptional facilities and expertise. The Pretoria Capitals Cricket Academy will be a place where young cricketers can prepare, perform and progress towards the next level. It also reflects our intent to have a meaningful, year-round presence in South Africa and strengthen our connection with the local cricket ecosystem.
Steven Ball, Director: TuksSport and CEO: HPC said: As TuksSport, we are proud of the rich history of our TuksCricket programme, which has produced players who’ve gone on to represent provincial franchises, national teams and the Proteas. Our partnership with the international brand Pretoria Capitals aligns with our vision of being Africa’s leading university sports programme - rooted in heritage and committed to transformation, diversity, and active citizenship. Through the world-class services of the HPC, SEMLI and the coaching excellence within TuksCricket, we believe we can make a major impact. Together, we are shaping the next generation of cricketers.
The Pretoria Capitals Cricket Academy will serve as a foundation for nurturing future professionals while broadening Pretoria’s role as a hub for cricket excellence in South Africa.
