After a weekend of mixed results, World Sports Betting Western Province Women’s batting coach, Linton Phillips is focusing on the lessons learned. The team fell to the Hollywoodbets Dolphins Women in the Hollywoodbets Pro50 on Saturday but showcased their resilience with strong victory in Sunday’s Pro20.
As the Girls in Blue prepare to travel to Johannesburg to face the DP World Lions Women this weekend, Phillips says the team will use those bittersweet outcomes as motivation. Both matches at the DP World Wanderers will start at 10am and will be live streamed via Cricket South Africa’s YouTube channel.
Phillips acknowledged the disappointment of Saturday’s loss but emphasised that the lessons learned will be key to improved performances.
“A bittersweet weekend going down on the Saturday but coming back strongly on the Sunday against the Dolphins,” Phillips said.
“Upon reflection after Saturday’s game, we immediately highlighted the fact that we were ill-disciplined with the ball in hand. Fielding-wise, we dropped catches at crucial moments and didn’t win the 50-50 situations during the game, which kept swinging momentum in the Dolphins’ favour.
“The turnaround time was very short going into Sunday but it showed the character of the girls to come back, correct those areas and put on a brilliant performance.”
Looking ahead, Phillips believes the squad will carry these valuable lessons into their fixtures against the Lions.
“The positive is that we’ve shown consistency with the bat across both formats,” he explained. “That will be our main focus again – maintaining that consistency, while also bringing the same level of discipline with the ball and in the field.”
“We can certainly expect the WSB Western Province Women to rock up this weekend with a positive mindset and a positive cricket approach,” he added. “Our focus is to execute our brand of cricket in all three departments as best as we can on the day.”
