The United Rugby Championship can confirm that the Round 8 Glasgow Warriors v Edinburgh game will now be played at Hampden Park stadium.

The game was originally slated to play on Saturday, December 21 but moves to a new date and kick-off time to accommodate the shift in venue, with the two teams now set to go head-to-head on Sunday 22 December (kick-off 3pm local time, 5pm SAST) on one of Glasgow’s – and Scotland’s – biggest stages.

The URC and host broadcasters Premier Sports were eager to support this bold move by Glasgow Warriors as they seek to broaden access to rugby across the city and the west of Scotland.

Hampden Park will become the 55th venue to host a league fixture and now means that both of the 1872 Cup derby games between Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh will be hosted in national stadiums. The return leg plays a week later at Scottish Gas Murrayfield.

Season Ticket Holders and Glasgow Warriors supporters club members will receive an email in the coming days outlining the ticket allocation process for Hampden Park.

Tickets will go on general sale on Friday 25 October at 10am.

  • Hampden Park has also held four full international rugby union matches since the stadium’s opening, the first of which saw Scotland beat South Africa 6-0 in 1906 in front of 30 000 spectators; the stadium has since been a venue for the 1999 Rugby World Cup and most recently saw Scotland take on Australia in an autumn Test in November 2004.
