Gauteng teams march on at FNB U16 Grant Khomo Week

The Golden Lions and Blue Bulls extended their winning streaks in the second round of the FNB U16 Grant Khomo Week staged at Kearsney College in Botha's Hill near Durban on Wednesday and will meet in the main match on the final day of the tournament on Friday.

The second day of the FNB U16 Grant Khomo tournament delivered its fair share of drama, with Griquas, the Leopards, Namibia, Border, Valke, Sharks, Iqhawe, Bulls, Sharks XV, Lions and Boland claiming victories.

The Leopards, Border, Bulls, Sharks XV and Lions extended their winning runs, while Griquas, Namibia, the Valke, Sharks and Boland bounced back from the defeats on Monday.

The fixture between the Lions and Western Province staged at the end of the second round lived up to the hype, with the boys from Gauteng eventually winning 34-33.

Province took the lead via a converted try in the 57th minute, before Lions flyhalf Cian Jonck stepped up in the dying seconds to slot the match-winning penalty.

Earlier in the day, Griquas hooker Danré Moos scored a hat-trick in his side's 70-0 hammering of Border Country Districts, while the Leopards fired late to secure a 43-12 win against the Limpopo Blue Bulls.

Namibia flanker Marnu Schrader scored five tries in the Welwitschias' 90-0 rout of Kenya, while the Valke dominated Zimbabwe, with outside centre Keanu van der Merwe scoring a hat-trick and flyhalf Bokang Mabina contributing 21 points in a 71-5 victory.

In other matches, Border scored a converted try at the death to seal a 25-17 win over South Western Districts, and the Sharks were made to fight for a 27-12 win against the Pumas.

The Bulls outlasted Free State to prevail 48-38 in a 14-try thriller, while Boland downed EP 21-12.

The contest between the Griffons and the Iqhawe team was particularly close, with goal-kicking proving the difference. The Griffons converted one of their four tries, while Iqhawe replacement Keanan Aden Jafta slotted three kicks at goal, including a penalty goal at the death.

The FNB Youth Weeks programme continues at Kearsney College on Thursday, with the second round of the FNB U16 Girls Week.

KwaZulu-Natal will face Border Country Districts in the first match of the day, while Western Province and the Pumas – who both recorded wins in the first round – will meet later in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the third and final round of the FNB U16 Grant Khomo Week will be staged at the same venue on Friday, with the Lions and Bulls featuring in the final match.
