Just days after celebrating 70 years of sporting history, the DP World Wanderers Stadium has reached another significant milestone – this time looking firmly towards the future.

As part of its ongoing sustainability and infrastructure programme, the iconic Johannesburg venue, home to #ThePrideOfJozi, has commissioned a new borehole in partnership with Borehole Africa, providing an alternative water source to support the stadium’s day-to-day operations and strengthen its resilience during periods of water restrictions or supply disruptions.

The initiative forms part of the Lions Cricket broader Gold Standard campaign for the 2026/27 season, which reflects the organisation’s commitment to raising standards across every aspect of its operation – from cricket and the fan experience to infrastructure, sustainability and the way the stadium is managed. The borehole will support arrange of essential stadium requirements, including field irrigation, cleaning, maintenance and the operation of ablution facilities. By providing an additional water source, the project also helps reduce the stadium’s reliance on municipal water supplies.

For Lions Cricket CEO Jono Leaf-Wright, the project demonstrates how the Gold Standard is being translated into practical action.

“This is our Gold Standard in action – investing in practical, sustainable solutions that strengthen one of South Africa’s most iconic sporting venues for the future. The DP World Wanderers Stadium has been at the heart of South African cricket for 70 years and our responsibility now is to ensure that this great venue is equipped for the next 70. Our partnership with Borehole Africa is helping us strengthen the stadium’s water resilience and operate more sustainably, particularly during periods of water restrictions or supply disruptions.”

Borehole Africa's CEO Shane Solomon says the partnership reflects the growing importance of resilient water infrastructure at major venues.

“At Borehole Africa, we are incredibly proud to partner with the DP World Wanderers Stadium and Lions Cricket in strengthening the long-term water sustainability of such an iconic and prestigious venue. Water is a critical component of any large stadium operation, and we consider it a real privilege to have been entrusted as their water management partner. Working with Jono, Asif and the entire DP World Wanderers and Lions Cricket team has been exceptional - their commitment to innovation, sustainability and continuously improving the stadium is evident in everything they do. We look forward to our partnership and ensuring that the stadium continues to benefit from reliable, sustainable and quality water supply together with the highest standards of ongoing management and service."

The installation is another investment in the long-term sustainability and operational resilience of the DP World Wanderers Stadium, ensuring that the venue can continue to host major events and welcome thousands of fans while adapting to the changing demands of the future.

DP World Wanderers Stadium Manager Asif Khan says that the installation is another step in their executional excellence of The Gold Standard.

“Installing a borehole is a significant step forward for stadium operations, ensuring a reliable water supply during outages in the area – especially on match days. The Borehole Africa team has been exceptional and their contribution has been invaluable. Having a sustainable water solution in place ahead of the 2027 World Cup will help ensure that we can operate optimally and deliver a world-class experience.”

With its rich sporting heritage and a clear focus on innovation and sustainability, the DP World Wanderers Stadium is continuing to evolve – protecting its legacy while building towards its next chapter.
