Nelson Mandela International Day is a day held in honor of Nelson Mandela and celebrated annually on his birthday - 18 July. For the fifth consecutive year, the Lions Cricket Pride and powerful partners Ashraful Aid will combine and fully immerse themselves in making a tangible difference by way of packing food parcels for those in need.
“There can be no greater gift than that of giving one’s time and energy to help others without expecting anything in return,” Nelson Mandela.
In a powerful initiative driven by the desire to inspire change and act simply by lending a hand, over 5 000 food hampers are set to be packed and distributed, bringing nourishment to more than 20 000 people across Gauteng.
Driven by passion and purpose, this collaborative effort aims to tackle food insecurity while honouring the spirit of Tata Nelson Mandela, says Lions Cricket CEO Jono Leaf-Wright.
“Our fans know our heartbeat: One Team, One Stadium, One City of Gold. That’s why we’re reaching out to our friends, fans and families: There’s no better way to honour Madiba than to give of your time. A heartfelt THANK YOU to Ashraful Aid - it’s a privilege to stand shoulder to shoulder with you in making a difference. To our #ThePrideOfJozi: Let’s unite at the DP World Wanderers Stadium with our DP World Lions players and help build a stronger, more compassionate Province and Country for all.”
CEO of the Humanitarian Organisation Ashraful Aid, Suhail Wadee shared the organisation’s ambitious vision.
“This is more than an event - it’s a moment of national solidarity. We see the daily reality of hunger and hardship, and Mandela Day allows South Africans from all walks of life to respond with compassion and action. We’re proud to stand alongside Lions Cricket once again to lead this effort.”
This Mandela Day, Lions Cricket proudly stands behind the theme “it is in your hands” by taking meaningful action through our food packing initiative. Inspired by Madiba’s legacy of service and unity, we’re using the power of sport to bring people together- not just on the field, but in the heart of our communities. Every food parcel packed is a reminder that change starts with each of us and together, we can fight hunger and restore hope, one act at a time says Zethu Kaka, Lions Cricket CSI Lead.
“This initiative shines as a beacon of hope, amplifying the impact of collaboration to combat poverty. The DP World Wanderers Stadium, our DP World Lions players and all those that call it home, will warmly welcome all from far and wide from 9am on 18 July. Come and enjoy 67 minutes and play your part in being the change that you want to see. Our DP World Lions players and staff will be present too, so come and enjoy the inspirational day with your hero’s andheroine’s.”
