Day eight of the Telkom Netball League Power Week 1 delivered another round of decisive performances, setting up a compelling final day as teams look to close out the first power week on a high.
With standings tightening and momentum building, Saturday’s fixtures provided clarity at the top of both divisions while leaving just enough at stake heading into the final round.
Division one leaders, the Crinums, continued their commanding run with a 56-36 victory over their archrivals Jaguars. Any encounter between the two is always thrilling.
A strong first half saw them build a 29-14 lead, which they maintained through disciplined defence and efficient attacking play. With this result, the Crinums remain firmly in control heading into the final day.
The experience of SPAR Proteas legend Karla Pretorius came to the party and earned her Player of the Match accolade.
The Fireballs bounced back from three losses on the trot and produced a composed performance to defeat the Southern Stings 58-49, continuing their push up the standings. They are currently third on the log behind Crinums and Jaguars, who are first and second respectively.
After a balanced opening quarter, the Fireballs took control in the second, using quick ball movement through midcourt to create scoring opportunities and build a lead they would not relinquish.
Tarle Mathe who was very clinical and instrumental on midcourt earned Player of the Match honours for her stellar performance.
In an earlier game, the Tornados maintained their unbeaten run with a dominant 65-33 victory over the Comets, further strengthening their position at the summit of Division 2 log standings.
Their balance between defensive pressure and attacking efficiency continues to set them apart as the competition heads into its final day.
The Kingdom Queens who played in front of their own crowd and enjoyed home ground advantage delivered a strong 60-48 win over the Sunbirds, with a clinical second quarter laying the foundation for victory. The Mpumalanga side seems to be struggling to get off the mark with a few unforced errors.
Backed by a passionate crowd, the Queens continue to build momentum at a crucial stage of the competition.
The Baobabs recorded their second win an impressive 64-41 victory over the Diamonds, showcasing their attacking strength and capitalising on their opportunities throughout the match.
Meanwhile, Sonoblomo secured a 59-38 win over the Lilies, boosting their confidence heading into the final day.
The Malawi U21 side played their second last match of power week 1 with a commanding 73-29 victory over Tshukudu.
Their performances throughout the week have highlighted their growth and potential, leaving a strong impression on the competition.
All eyes are on the final day
With one day remaining:
Crinums will look to complete a dominant run in Division 1
Tornados aim to maintain their unbeaten streak in Division 2
Several teams will be chasing crucial wins to improve their standings
The stage is now set for an exciting conclusion to Power Week 1, with final positions and momentum heading into the next leg still very much in play.
