Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher really know how to suck the fun out of everything don’t they?
Their latest issue is that the Arsenal players and staff celebrated too hard for their liking after beating Liverpool 3-1 on Sunday.
How sad does your life have to be that seeing someone else enjoy themselves annoys you?
The former Manchester United and Liverpool defenders have been taking a battering on X since making their comments, with many pointing out their hypocrisy.
After all, who can forget Sir Alex Ferguson doing his best Phil Michelson jump (if you know, you know) while his assistant Brian Kidd is on his knees pumping his fists in the air on the field after a late winner for the Red Devils? (There hasn't been a celebration from current Uniter manager Erik ten Hag to rival this for obvious reasons).
Or Jurgen Klopp sprinting onto the field to jump into goalkeeper Alison Becker’s arms after his Reds scored against Everton?
Football is supposed to be a celebration; fans celebrate wins, great prices of skill, vital draws, securing the title and avoiding relegation with the same amount of fervor.
If players and staff aren’t allowed to enjoy their successes and ‘go down the tunnel’ as soon as they’ve beaten one of their rivals for the title, then they might as well replace the players with robots.
Fans enjoy seeing passion and personality out of their team.
They want to see that the match meant as much to them on the field as it did to the punters in the stands, taking that away will only make football poorer.
Both of these pundits have now tried to play their comments off as banter but nobody is falling for that old excuse.
Arsenal fans have taken a battering on social media for being third in the league after ‘celebrating like they won the title’ on Sunday, that is banter.
Men who are paid to be on TV to talk about the finer points of the game after their legendary careers came to an end should know better, be better.
Let Martin Ødegaard take a picture of club photographer Stuart MacFarlane if that is what makes him happy, it should only bother you unless you’re a small man with nothing but bitterness in your heart.
Let Mikel Arteta run down the sideline like a madman.
Seeing others happy won’t hurt you.
I hope Jamie and Gary find some happiness in their lives soon and they stop trying to bring everyone down to their level.
Be better …
