IFAF crowned a new world champion and a sixth straight title was secured as the IFAF Flag Football World Championships 2026 reached a dramatic conclusion with Canada’s women and the men of the United States both winning gold.
Canada’s women topped a defending United States team that had won the past three world championships with a defensive stop as time ran expired to edge a nerve-wracking gold medal game 27-20. Quarterback Sara Parker was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player as Canada won its third IFAF world crown and first since 2014.
The United States’ men rebounded from surrendering a 14-year unbeaten streak to American Samoa earlier in the competition and close calls in the knockout rounds by beating Italy 46-26 as Darrell ‘Housh’ Doucette won the MVP award.
Forty-two percent of all games played across four days of action at the Flag Football Complex in Düsseldorf-Garath were decided by one score or less. The games attracted 20 000 attendees and reached a potential broadcast audience of 180-million.
“Düsseldorf 2026 has truly set a new benchmark for an international flag football event,” said IFAF President Pierre Trochet. “This World Championship has raised the bar in every area and delivered unforgettable moments and emotions - not least with our first-ever Olympic Games qualifiers securing their tickets to LA28.
“On the field, we have clearly seen the most competitive action ever, with extraordinarily tight contests and incredible plays at every stage of the competition. Off the field, with record attendance and global broadcast audiences for flag football, we are witnessing the start of a new era. I want to recognise our exceptional partners at D.Sports, the 300 magnificent volunteers and everyone in the State of North Rhine Westphalia for the welcome they have given the global flag football family throughout this electrifying week.”
Two nations – Mexico’s women and Canada’s men - secured a golden ticket qualification for LA28 when flag football will debut at the Olympic Games with bronze medal game victories over Great Britain (20-19) and Mexico (34-26) respectively.
The United States, Italy and Canada have qualified for the men’s six-team competition at LA28 and in the women’s tournament, Canada, the United States and Mexico have all booked their place. IFAF continental championships scheduled for 2027 will determine which 12 men’s and women’s teams head to Montreal and Canada in 2028 for the Olympic Qualifying Series that will decide the final three available places.
