Durban Goldrush Boland secured a nine-wicket victory over the Hollywoodbets Dolphins in their 1-Day Cup clash at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium on Tuesday.
Having won the toss and elected to bat first, the Dolphins’ decision quickly backfired. They lost Jon-Jon Smuts for a duck in just the second over, caught at cover off Imraan Manak, setting the tone for what was a difficult innings. Tshepang Dithole followed in the eighth over for 10, also falling to Manak, as the Dolphins slipped to 21/2.
A brief period of stability saw Marques Ackerman and Eddie Moore take the score to 38/2 after 10 overs but the momentum was short-lived. Moore was run out for 10 following a sharp direct hit after being sent back, leaving the Dolphins at 42/3. Although they reached 50 in the 13th over, wickets continued to tumble.
Romashan Pillay departed for nine after a leading edge off Jevano Baron and Hanu Viljoen edged behind for five, also off Baron, as the Dolphins slid to 81/5. Ackerman offered the only real resistance, compiling a patient 40 off 52 balls but his dismissal in the 22nd over at 85/6 effectively ended hopes of a recovery.
The lower order failed to provide meaningful support. Debutant Aryan Gopalan was bowled for a duck, Tristan Luus managed just one, and the Dolphins found themselves reeling at 90/8. The tail added a few late runs, with Imran Tahir striking a six in his 15 but the innings closed on 109 in 30.4 overs.
Boland’s response was controlled and clinical from the outset. Blayde Capell and Grant Roelofsen provided a solid platform, racing to 20 without loss after four overs and bringing up a 50-run partnership in the 12th over.
The Dolphins managed a single breakthrough when Tahir had Roelofsen caught at long-off for 33 but that was as good as it got. Capell continued to anchor the chase, reaching his half-century off 73 balls as Boland moved to 90/1 at the 20-over drinks break, needing just 20 more runs.
Capell and Gavin Kaplan ensured there were no further hiccups. The pair guided Boland past 100 in the 22nd over and calmly completed the chase, with Capell finishing unbeaten on 60 and Kaplan on 15.
It was a commanding performance from Boland, whose disciplined bowling and composed batting exposed the Dolphins’ frailties on the day.
