Tucker back in the Proteas squad

Karabo Meso recently made her debut for South Africa in the T20 Internationals against Sri Lanka and the 16-year-old has now been selected as part of the squad to face them in the One-Day International series starting on Tuesday. Gallo Images

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has announced the 14-player squad that will feature for the Proteas Women in the upcoming three-match ICC Women’s Championship (2022-25) One-Day International (ODI) series against Sri Lanka from 9-17 April in East London, Kimberley and Potchefstroom.

The squad sees one change from the recently concluded T20 International series against Sri Lanka. World Sports Betting Western Province all-rounder Delmi Tucker has been added to the squad, while Annerie Dercksen from Six Gun Grill Garden Route Badgers will not be part of the 50-over encounters.

In a notable inclusion, 16-year-old wicket-keeper batter Karabo Meso from the DP World Lions earns her maiden ODI call-up for South Africa after making her international debut in the second T20I against Sri Lanka.

Experienced all-rounder Chloé Tryon will miss the ODI series due to ongoing rehabilitation for back pain.

Proteas Women head coach, Hilton Moreeng commented: “It's a very simple equation for us, there’s six points to play for and Sri Lanka showed now in the last two to three days what they are capable of so it's now to make sure that we can get that right because every game there's a lot more to play for. Qualification is key for the 2025 World Cup.

“It's going to be a challenge but everyone is looking forward to it and we have a very strong squad on home soil.

“It's a big loss with the injury of Chloé as an all-rounder, that's why Delmi has come into the squad and she can give you the off-spin option and with her batting.

“In these conditions, we never know this time of year what to expect on our surfaces. So we make sure that we have all our angles covered and overall we're just excited to make sure that we finish off on a high and go into our off-season."

Convenor of Selectors, Clinton du Preez said: "These upcoming matches against Sri Lanka are pivotal for our campaign in the ICC Women's Championship. We need to ensure that we have a squad with depth and versatility to tackle the challenges ahead.

"The addition of a player like Delmi Tucker brings versatility within the squad to strengthen some strategic requirements. Karabo Meso’s inclusion allows her to have a continued run within the set-up. We are very positive about her transition and would like to provide more playing opportunities to assist with her experience and growth.

"I would like to extend my best wishes to the Proteas Women's squad as they embark on this important series against Sri Lanka.”
